Maheshwar is a very beautiful temple town on the bank of the Narmada River, Situated in the Khargon district of Madhya Pradesh. People who want to spend time near the bank of any river with a rich natural feel, endless fun, and calm should go to Maheshwar.

It is visited by an endless number of tourists throughout the year and is said to blanket many magnificent places in and around worth visiting. It is widely known as a perfect tourist destination. There is a huge number of pilgrims traveling up here in search of self-realization and in pursuit of attaining inner peace.

Maheshwar was also the capital of Ahilya Devi’s empire during the 18th century. Like most parts of MP the weather in Maheshwar is tropical.

By Air: The nearest airport to reach Maheshwar is the Indore Airport, which is located at the distance of 91 km.

By Train: Marwaha Railway Station (Approx 39 Km) is the nearest railway junction to reach the destination.

By Road: Maheshwar is well connected by road to various cities of Madhya Pradesh. Various private and state government buses connect to major cities.

  • You can explore the riverside temples of Maheshwar including Kaleshwara Temple, Rajarajeshwara Temple, Akhileshwara Temple and Vithaleshwara Temple, which are popular for the unique overhanging balconies and beautiful crafted walls
  • Visit Maheshwar Fort, a 16th century fort which houses an archaeological museum displaying antiques and unlike possessions of Holkar dynasty. The major draw of the fort is Rani Ahilyabai statue

Best time to visit Maheshwar

For the Maheshwar trip, avoid the rainy season and summer. The Narmada River is in full capacity in the rainy season, and nature lovers will miss the fun. In summer, it is very hot and difficult to visit because you need to climb in the fort here and there during your visit. Therefore, the winter and spring seasons are the best time to visit for devotees, tourists and nature lovers.

The city is famous for delicate cotton and silk textiles. There are plenty of handloom shops that offer woven and designed silk sarees which are known as Maheswari Sarees. If you’re here for shopping then do not miss to buy wonderful pieces of textile art.
